Located in a beautiful 1880s Victorian home in the historic Germantown neighborhood, Monell’s offers a variety of all-you-can-eat meals. Long wooden tables seat up to a dozen people, creating a family dining experience. Each day’s menu includes 2-3 meats, 3-4 salads, 4-5 hot vegetables, bread, preserves, drinks, and dessert. Appetizers are bottomless bowls and plates with southern delicacies served with all the trimmings.

Among the first courses that grace the table are the best pan-fried chicken, barbecued pork and ribs, fried catfish, spinach lasagna, pork chops, roast, and stewed chicken with sauce. Meals depend on the days of the week. Saturday and Sunday country breakfasts are great with eggs, sausage, bacon, country ham, fried chicken, grits, pancakes, brown pancakes, biscuits, gravy, corn pudding, orange juice, and coffee.

Family-style Southern food at Monell’s is served buffet-style, meaning you don’t have to reach for the steam table to get another serving. The experience captures the warmth and abundance of a holiday meal without the bickering and uneven cooking. Even with a dozen options, everything on the table requires a second helping.

Family seating like this attracts the sociable and terrifies the misanthropic. Both people will have to deal with unpredictable wait times because Germantown has only a few tables and they seat everyone at the same time. Although we’re more into southern classics than conversation, we didn’t feel much social pressure at the table, just friendly smiles and good manners. Remember to walk to the left. Don’t worry about taking the last biscuit, the staff is trained to sense empty baskets.

On the table during Sunday lunch there are four main courses, eight side dishes, a flavorful biscuit/corn basket and an unforgettable strawberry pie. Kettle-fried chicken is served at every meal – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – every day that ends in “y”. We can see why. It’s peppered and gently cooked to the point where the breading remains savory and the chicken retains all its juices. Fried catfish is an everyday dish that almost outshines chicken. Each fillet is boldly seasoned with blackening spices and cooked more precisely than much of what we’ve eaten in expensive seafood restaurants.

The best side dish is the macaroni and cheese topped with a golden brown cheese sauce. You also can’t miss the signature corn pudding. This sweet and savory porridge made from fresh and dried corn is flavorful enough to complement any other dish on your plate like a sauce.

Gray & Dudley https://thegraycanary.com/gray-dudley/ Sun, 19 Nov 2023 09:48:00 +0000 https://thegraycanary.com/?p=48 Gray & Dudley, located in 21C Museum Hotel, is the perfect place to take your girlfriend out to dinner on your birthday or your new Boo on a date.

Gray & Dudley, located in 21C Museum Hotel, is the perfect place to take your girlfriend out to dinner on your birthday or your new Boo on a date. It’s named after the building’s original tenant, the Gray & Dudley hardware store. No doubt they wouldn’t recognize the space today. The goats hanging from the ceiling are replaced with nuts and bolts, and the elegant bar is replaced with old racks. A valet service is a must (there is little parking on Printer’s Alley) and be sure to walk through the hotel, where you can enjoy the art corridor. Once in the restaurant, feast on gourmet chic American cuisine. The menu changes seasonally, but if they are available, order the twice-baked bone marrow potatoes. It is not only tasty and rich, but also spectacularly served inside the bone.

The coating is an art itself. There are also reasonable portions. We tried a couple of small plates and one dish and were very satisfied. The Nandini’s Grey Garden cocktail is great, but if you like the classics, their gin and tonic will give you pleasure. The staff will be happy to let you know what they like best, tell you lots of stories about Gray and Dudley, and even bring a little green friend to your table. I tried the Gulf fish ceviche, roasted carrots (which were just added to the menu), shrimp noodles, and steak with mushrooms. I don’t usually order steak out, but it was perfectly prepared. The fish came from a local farm, Black Hawk Farms, and the fish was caught in Galveston, Texas, so everything was fresh.

However, there is much more to the menu. At first glance, it’s not for the delicate palate or vegetarian. Chef Lavon Wallace came to Nashville to open Cochon Butcher. Anyone who specializes in cured and smoked meats, hot dogs, bacon and pork belly sandwiches has a strong palate. Gray and Dudley’s menu features robust flavors and dishes, including homemade bacon and onion pie, fried bones, smoked catfish sauce, pork chops, and steak tartare. Vegetables (roasted radishes and charred asparagus) are supercharged with green harissa, a spicy Moroccan condiment, and gribiche sauce, a French cold egg sauce perked up with capers and mustard. Lavon Wallace is not a fluffy crème, but he can certainly make it.

Which brings me to dessert. All of them sounded good, but we chose the crème fraîche, which looks like a tiramisu in a little shell. The hazelnuts are like little pearls that you can find inside, and the chocolate and espresso cream come out of the shell in the right amount. There is really nothing I didn’t like about this experience. And, I won’t spoil it, but they give you a small, happy treat with your check. Definitely go, enjoy, and relax.

The Joseph Nashville Hotel is a luxurious box of original art and thoughtful views. Its gourmet Italian restaurant, Yolan, is a perfect fit. From the minute you walk in off the street or from the hotel, you know you’re not just in any restaurant. The dark walnut tables are inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and a huge copper and blown glass chandelier hangs above the bar. It comes from the private collection of the hotel owner Joel Pizzuti. He was just waiting for the right place to hang it. The walls are lined with a large collection of the restaurant’s wines. Everything signals that you are about to have lunch.

What’s the crowd like?

As you might expect from a restaurant headed by a Michelin-starred chef in the city’s finest luxury hotel, this place attracts a wealthy crowd. Hotel guests, Nashville politicians, celebrities, and longtime locals who are thrilled to have fine Italian cuisine in town. It’s a low-key elegance (not many suits and ties), but still elegance.

What should we drink?

This is a place where you can satisfy your heart’s desire, so choose one of the seasonal cocktails to start or ask the bartender to prepare your favorite. But the centerpiece of your meal should be the wines, mostly Italian, which have been selected by Kathy Mantuano and her catfish and served in handmade Veronese glasses. The tasting menu allows you to defer to Mantuanos to get a curated experience.

The main event: food.

Michelin-starred chef Tony Mantuano spent decades at Spiaggia in Chicago, and after retiring, he was brought in to come to Nashville and open Yolan. His menu includes antipasti, primi and seconds. The menu is small, seasonal and almost flawless. The presentation is exquisite. Mantuano has chosen everything, down to every utensil, so even the weight of the fork in your hand as you spin the pasta is part of the intentional experience. And you should, because Mantuano pasta is legendary. Imagine truffle gnocchi, breaded veal chops, or linguine with clams, squid, and mussels. And don’t sleep on the desserts from pastry chef Noelle Marchetti. She was a James Beard Award semi-finalist and her sweets are on par with Mantuano’s dishes. Choose another day to skip dessert.

How were you treated?

As soon as you walk in, the staff will already know your name and address you appropriately. You’ll have plenty of time to think about your options without being rushed, but not so much that you’re impatient. It’s a place where attention to detail is paid, so take a moment to appreciate its well-organized service.
